Will Work For Free: How Robots Will Play a Major Role In the Future Economy

By James Shea:

As the age of the workforce in America continues to increase and more workers are starting to retire, the problem facing the workforce now is how to replace these jobs when there aren’t enough workers to replace them.

The generation of aging workers is referred to as the Baby Boomer Generation and is comprised of 76 million Americans born between 1946 and 1964.This massive influx of births led to an explosion in the workforce which the economy has ridden on for the last 40 years and is now on the way out. And with the generations after the Baby Boomers not having enough people to replace all the jobs lost, there is a dire need for supplementing this lack of manpower.

The answer? Possibly robots.

So why are robots the answer to this critical problem? First, robots are able to be made quickly. This is crucial when time is of the essence and we are unable to wait for another generation to come along to fill the workforce gap of those who are already able to retire.

Second, robots are able to learn quickly. Not only this, but as technology become better and better robots are able to learn more complex subjects at a quicker pace. Examples of this would be cloud robotics and deep learning which allow robots to learn for themselves and communicate that knowledge between each other.

Finally, robots are versatile. This means that they are able to be utilized wherever they are needed at the time. Combined with cloud robotics to share information, all robots’ abilities to perform different tasks increases exponentially.

With all of these attributes combined, this shows the potential of robots in this pressing issue and as companies start to convert more to robotic labor, the benefits will continue to show.
